Programs
Natural Helpers:
The purpose of Natural Helpers at Hamilton is to extend and strengthen the natural “helping network” that exists within the school. Students are identified as natural helpers through an anonymous school-wide survey; these students are naturally helpful and supportive peers who are sought out for advice, assistance, or to lend an empathetic ear. These individuals are invited to participate in the program and if they accept, are trained as Natural Helpers at the retreat as well as through ongoing programming throughout the year.
Natural helpers are trained to provide students with peer support in many ways. Not only are these students trained to effectively intervene with troubled friends, but they are also trained to keep an eye out for warning signs, and to correctly identify when a problem is too big; our students know that at times, a referral to a school counselor, teacher, or parent is more appropriate.
Natural Helpers aim to improve school climate by acting as the eyes and ears for student social and emotional struggles while at school. The Natural Helpers also do programming to help break down social barriers between existing social groups at school, thus helping to improve school climate, academic achievement, and positive peer relationships.
Rainbow Justice League:
The Rainbow Justice League which began as a counseling-center run group is now advised by Ms. McClurg & Ms. Burchardt. This group is a place to discuss acceptance, issues of bullying, train students how to be an ally, and to explore GLBTQ issues. The group is a place to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills and is open to anyone interested. For more details, email Ms. McClurg: mbmcclurg@seattleschools.org
