Students in grades K-7 throughout Seattle test for entry into the Accelerated Progress Program (APP) for academically, highly gifted students. This program is a comprehensive, cohesive, rigorous course of study consisting of APP Science, APP Language Arts and Social Studies, and Mathematics taught by instructors who have experience and endorsement in teaching gifted students.
For middle school, those living north of the ship canal attend the Hamilton International Middle School’s program. Special features of this program include:
1. Students’ advanced academic needs met in classes generally working 2 years above their grade level at an accelerated pace in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Reading.
2. Sixth and seventh grade Language Arts and Social Studies classes meet in two period blocks for the two years of 6th and 7th grade (a practice called looping).
3. High school level classes taught in middle school in the sciences (Physical Science, gr. 7 and Biology, gr. 8), math (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II), and social studies (AP prep class for AP World History, gr. 8).
Spectrum
Spectrum is a rigorous program designed to challenge and inspire your student to think and learn at a higher level. Spectrum is a block class comprised of two subjects: Language Arts and Social Studies. In Language Arts, students participate in the Reading and Writing Workshop program, often with additional independent writing projects assigned. There are generally more expectations and responsibilities placed on the Spectrum student. Reading materials and text is usually 1-2 years above grade level, and there is often advanced homework required on a weekly basis. There is one Spectrum block at each grade level. Applications for the Spectrum program are accepted at the district’s Advanced Placement Office every October for the following school year’s placement. Testing usually happens in December-January. If you have any questions, please contact one of our Hamilton school counselors.
