HOST Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cost for HOST programs?

HOST programs are free to all students and are funded by the 2004 Families and Education Levy.  Snacks and transportation are provided for those attending activities.

How long is the Fall HOST session?  What about other sessions?

The Fall HOST session will run until Thursday, December 10.  The Winter session will start in mid to late January and run until Spring Break.  The Spring session will start shortly after Spring Break and run until June 4, 2010.  Some classes will run during the Winter and Spring session while others might be offered during just one of the sessions.

How do I get a registration form?

HOST Registration forms are located outside the YMCA office in room 113 and outside the main office.  The form can also be downloaded on this page.

What time does HOST begin and end?

HOST begins at 2:45 and ends at 4:30pm.

Is there HOST on Early Release days?

There is no HOST on early release days.  For the Fall session there will be no HOST on October 28, November 11 and 25.

My child needs a PE waiver.  Can they obtain it through HOST?

Yes.  Each day of HOST attended is one hour and forty five minutes towards the required time.  Families will be responsible for keep track of these hours.  For more  information click here.

Where does my child meet for after school programs?

The HOST Confirmation form your child receives also lists the room number in which the class is held.  Please have your student see the YMCA office if they have questions.

My child attends a class off site.  Where do I pick them up from?

Rock Climbing, Skateboarding, Intro to Squash and Martial Arts are the current HOST classes that meet out side of the building.  Each class is designed to have the student back at Hamilton by 4:30pm.  Please contact the YMCA office if you would like to make other arrangements for your student.

Where is the YMCA office?  Who do I talk to regarding HOST questions?

The YMCA Community Learning Center (CLC) is located in room 113.  The office number is (206) 252-5831.  YMCA CLC Director Chris Rossman (carossman@seattleschools.org) is accompanied by staff member Liz Chase (eachase@seattleschools.org).  Faxes can be sent to the school at (206) 252-5811.

Can I volunteer during HOST?

Yes. Many of our classes welcome volunteers.  Please contact HIMS Volunteer Coordinator Liz Chase at (206) 252-5831 for more information.

My student turned in a registration for HOST programs.  How will I know what classes they are enrolled in?

Once we receive registration forms they are put into our HOST attendance system and we complete a HOST Confirmation form that is delivered to your student (normally during 5th period).  Things that commonly happen to delay this process are: Turning the forms in to a teacher and not the YMCA office (room 113) or YMCA mailbox in the main office, and forgetting to circle the class(es) you want.

My student received a HOST Conformation form saying they are on the “Waiting List” for a class.  What does this mean?

Many classes have a limit to the number of students that are enrolled.  Once that limit is reached a student not enrolled in the class is put on a waiting list.  If a spot becomes available students from the waiting lists are chosen to fill those spots.  A spot becomes available when an enrolled student drops the class or has three unexcused absences from that class.  Waiting list students will be given priority for a particular class (i.e. Rock Climbing, Cooking, etc.) if it is offered the next HOST session.

What happens if a HOST class is cancelled?

If the YMCA CLC office knows more than two days in advance a class will be cancelled then an announcement will be placed in the school bulletin that is read to the school each morning.  Regardless of when we learn of the cancellation we have HOST announcements delivered to students in that class stating the class is cancelled for the day and to go home their normal way at 2:35pm.  An all school announcement is also made prior to the 2:35pm bell stating that a HOST class is cancelled.  There are still students that don’t listen to the daily bulleting announcements, don’t receive their HOST Announcement about class cancellations, and fail to hear the end of the day announcement.  If a student still shows up for a cancelled class they are given the option to attend another HOST class that has space or contact their parent for pick up.

How does HOST transportation work?

If “Metro Token” is checked on your HOST registration form your student is put on a list of students that can receive Metro Tokens after HOST.  If “Activity Bus” is checked your students name and Student ID number are sent to the Seattle Public Schools Transportation Department.  From there your student is assigned a stop on one of our four activity busses.  Most areas in the Seattle city limits are served by our routes.  Please remember that the Transportation Department may need up to 10 working days to assign an after school bus route.  A student’s regular school bus IS NOT the same bus during after school activities.  If your student would like to attend HOST prior to being assigned to a HOST bus they can be picked up, get a metro token (if ok’d by parent), or the YMCA office can work with the family to assign the student an existing stop that may be close to your home.  Once a student is assigned a stop they may use that bus any day they attend a HOST program for the rest of the school year.

Please send a note if your student will need alternate transportation (i.e. bus token, different stop, etc.).  If you need to make a permanent change to your student’s HOST bus stop you will need to contact the Transportation Department at (206) 252-5831.  The YMCA Office is not allowed to change a student’s stop.

Please note that it is your child’s responsibility to get on the activity bus at 4:45pm.  The YMCA is not responsible for your child getting home if he or she is not on the activity bus when it leaves the school or other departure spot communicated to your child.

How do you choose what classes are offered on the HOST schedule?

Prior to the HOST session we send out class proposal forms to school staff, community based organizations, and other interested members of the community.  Once we receive all of the proposals we put together a schedule that fits in our allotted budget and includes a balance of academic, enrichment, and recreational classes.  If you or someone you know would be interested in running a HOST class please contact the YMCA office.  Many of our classes are also run by volunteers or individuals hired as part time employees.
